An Interesting Find
Here’s what the dog and I found after mowing out at the cabin. We discovered it on a perimeter walk.
At one time my neighbor out there raised sled dogs and trained them using a portion of the property line. He ran a Cat down it, then turned right for a mile or so to make a longer lane to run them. All of the property to the right is Ahtna Native Corporation, to the left, mine. Often we’re fairly relaxed up here in the bush. I saw no reason to tell him he couldn’t. I have no idea if he had permission from Ahtna - since he didn’t get mine, I have my doubts. Most corporations won’t give permission because of liability. Without a lot of bushwhacking or going on my property, it would be difficult for them to even know he was there. The scars on the marker you see are where he hooked it, pulling it out. Was easy enough for me to put back. The winter before Rebecca and I purchased the property, the folks we bought it from lost their dog to wolves. Wolves sent a female in to lure him out, then ate him. There might be a lesson in there somewhere!
A few feet from the marker I found this Bearing Tree sign. They must have nailed it onto a knot, as the grain was very twisted. It took me a couple of hours to cut it out. As I understand things, the field surveyor’s notes would direct you to the trees, then further notes from the trees to the marker. I’ll need to stop by the BLM office in Glennallen and tell them about its being pulled out. They may just make a notation or might go out and accurately reposition it.
This is what it should have looked like before the tree’s growth damaged it.
